The Quarryville Library will be hosting the following programs in October!

Story Times
Come for themed stories, songs and crafts. 3’s on Mondays: Oct. 12th through Nov. 16th. 4 and 5’s on Tuesdays: Oct. 13th through Nov. 17th 18mo – 3’s (with an adult) Fridays: Oct. 16th through Nov. 20th All at 10:30am.

Family Movie Night
Come in with the family for some popcorn, a movie and some quality time together! Now showing: Monsters vs. Aliens. Monday, October 5th at 6:30pm (All ages)

Wild Rumpus Story Time
Join us as we celebrate “wild rumpus” style, the release of the Where the Wild Things Are movie! Stories, games and activities for ages 3 and up! Monday, October 12th at 6:30pm

Thursday Gaming Nights
Play video games on a HUGE screen, make new friends. Library supplies an X-box 360 and Wii, plus Rock Band, Wii Sports and Mario Kart. Play our games or bring your own - must be rated “E” if kids 13 or younger are present. Every 3rd Thursday September 17th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm (Ages 10 & Up)

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Join us for a special after hours presentation of the
Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Neill Hartley is Ichabod Crane in a one-man interactive adaptation of the classic horror tale by Washington Irving. See Ichabod interacting with students, leading the congregation in song, and dancing with his love. Then follow him on his fateful journey home as he meets the Headless Horseman! Friday, October 23rd at 6:30pm.

Parental discretion is advised.

Please note: This is an after hours, special event. The library is NOT open for business during this program. You WILL NOT be able to check out books before or afterwards.

Family Place Workshops
Join us for a five-week series of parent-child early learning play time! A fun hour complete with books, blocks, puzzles, songs and other interactive toys. Appropriate for ages 6 mo. - 3 years. Tuesdays 10/27 – 11/24, 6:30 – 7:30pm Wednesdays 10/28 – 11/25, 10:30 – 11:30am

End of Summer Reading

Hello everyone, apologies for the long absence. We had some major problems with the blog and the qvlyouthservices e-mail account. Perhaps I should admit that I am rather a novice at this, but I think we are all back on track and ready to begin again.

By now, all the winners of the Teen Book Review Contest have been notified but for everyone else's information the last two winning book reviews were for the books "Brown Sunshine" and "Our Only May Amelia." Congratulations to those two reviewers and thanks to everyone who participated in our book reviews!

The Quarryville Library is looking for guys and girls 13 and older who would be interested in joining a book club. Join us for our first meeting to brainstorm book and club ideas, hang out and eat some snacks.

One Book Every Young Child
Now in it’s fourth year, this state wide program encourages early literacy in young children. Join us as we read “If You Were a Penguin” by Wendell and Florence Minor. During this special story hour children will have the chance to explore and play with an interactive display based on the book, full of games, puzzles and toys. Plus a visit from special guest storybook character Tacky the Penguin. Most importantly, each child in attendance will go home with a FREE copy of the book. Saturday, April 18th at 10:30am

Earth Day at the Quarryville Library
On April 25th from 11:00am to 4:00pm the library will be hold it’s second annual “Earth Day at the Quarryville Library” event in order to promote and educate our community about making environmentally friendly choices.

The day’s activities include:
- 3 FREE “Endangered Species” shows with live animals by Zoo America
- Winners of the Elementary Story Book writing contest based on the theme “Trash Talk” will be displayed
- A free tree seedling give away
- Planting and official opening of the new Children’s Garden
- “Make it and take it” recycled projects for kids
- A car powered by vegetable oil
- Hands on learning tables for all ages
- Deb Maule’s Catering on site

Tickets are required for the Zoo America show and are being given away at the circulation desk in the library. Join us for this all day event (11am – 4pm) to celebrate our awesome earth. Sponsored by PPL and Todd Construction.

Storybook Writing Contest

To celebrate Earth Day, Quarryville Library announces it's second annual Storybook Writing Contest. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to write and illustrate their own book based on the theme:

"TRASH TALK"
Suggestions include:
How can you reduce your use of environmentally harmful things?
What items can you reuse in your household?
What items can you recycle?
What is a landfill and what kinds of items go into one?
How long do things stay in a landfill?
Use your imagination, anything about trash and the environment counts!

Rules and guidelines for contest entries, as well as entry forms can be found at library on the sign up sheet table.

Twilight DVD Release Party!!

From Pilot International this short program, conducted by a nurse, introduces you and your children to fun characters like Penny Panda who teaches seatbelt safety and Martin Monkey who teaches playground safety. A Visit with Mr. Lincoln
History comes alive with America’s foremost Abraham Lincoln portrayer, Jim Getty. In his one-man performance he recounts Lincoln’s homespun stories of youth and his personal and political life. After sharing his incite and memories he will gladly pose for
photographs and conduct a Presidential “press conference” for those with questions. You won’t want to miss your opportunity to see this critically acclaimed performance from the man whose wowed the likes of National Geographic and the Department of Defense. He will touch the hearts and minds of children and adults alike! Appropriate for 2nd graders through adults.

Build an Igloo in the Library
We’ve been collecting empty gallon jugs for months now to accumulate enough to build a life-size igloo. Our goal is 500 jugs so if you’ve got some at home, bring them in! Then join us as we construct our indoor igloo for all to share! We’ll need lots of helpers plus there will be icy activities for all ages! You can even personalize your own “ice block” to put in the igloo! Saturday, February 28th starting at 10:30am and lasting until we are finished!

Contest Announced

To promote the newest additions to the library, we are holding a reading contest to give away a brand new copy of the family-favorite game Sorry. All you have to do is pick up an entry form from the library, read five books, fill out their titles on the entry form, and return your form to the library by Wednesday, January 28th. The winner will be announced that evening at the Family Board Game Night.

January Programs

Here is a look at the programs coming up in January. If you're like me and need a calendar to keep your life straight we have two options for you. First, you can check out the link on the right side labeled "Quarryville Library Calendar of Events." This link will not only show you youth events but all programs the library will be hosting in January. Second, you can stop by the library and pick up a paper copy of our January Children's Calendar, which only lists youth activities on it.

3 Year Olds

Family Movie Night "Wall-E"

What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? Bring the family to watch this heart-warming new Disney-Pixar movie sure to become a classic.

Gaming Night

Drop in, hang out and play some video games on a HUGE screen. The library supplies an X-box 360 and a Wii, plus Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and DDR. Play our games or bring some of your own!

Every third Thursday beginning January 15th, 4:00pm - 8:00pm

Family Place Workshops

Join us for a five-week series of parent-child early learning play time! A fun hour complete with books, blocks, puzzles, songs and other interactive toys. Plus each week we welcome a special community guest available to answer questions about development, nutrition, early literacy, and many other topics. Ages birth to 3 years.

Tuesdays 1/20 - 2/17, 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Wednesdays 1/21 - 2/18, 10:30am - 11:30am

Work and Play in Colonial Times

Learn about the "good-old-days" from our friends at the Landis Valley Museum. Participants can try their hand at carding wool, grinding corn and playing historical games among other things. A family friendly hour filled with good old-fashioned fun!

Winnie-the-Pooh Story Time

That's right, everyone's favorite bear will leave the Hundred Acre Woods and stop by the Quarryville Library for some fun. Stories, crafts and lots of fun are in store at this special story time.

Family Board Game Night

Quarryville Library will soon offer board games to borrow! Join us for Family Board Game Night to launch this new service. Our selection will include games like: Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Cranium, Life, Shrek Operation, Twister, Yahtzee, Sorry, Clue, Scene It Disney Edition, Monopoly, Scrabble, Scrabble Jr., Risk, Battleship, Parchessi, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Chinese Checkers and many more!

Be the first to play our games! Those who attend Family Board Game Night will get first choice at which game they would like to borrow.

New Service for the New Year

Welcome to the QVL Youth Services Blog. As the New Year quickly approaches we are seeking new ways to keep you informed of our happenings here at the library. This will be the best place to find updates and information about programs, projects and current events that involve our library life.

We follow in the footsteps of the Lancaster Public Library (LPL), the Bookmoblie and our Library System of Lancaster County Training Coordinator, who already provide this awesome service and we hope to do as well as they have. Check out their blogs listed on the right side of the page.
